Origin: Originally conceived in 1989 as a performance basketball shoe, the New Balance 550, known then as the P550 Oxford, was designed by Steven Smith. This initial iteration, however, failed to achieve significant recognition, fading into obscurity shortly after its release. The model's resurgence, however, would be masterminded decades later.
Construction: The 'Lakers Pack - Vibrant Orange' iteration features a low-top silhouette with a paneled design and a blend of materials. These include a leather upper, complemented by perforated leather sections and a breathable mesh tongue. Further enhancing its design are a cushioned textile collar and a durable rubber sole.
Utility: Initially engineered for performance basketball, the New Balance 550 has transcended its original purpose to become a lifestyle sneaker. While suitable for casual wear and light activities such as weightlifting, it is not recommended for running or extensive cardio exercises. The shoe's design provides a slight height boost of around 3-4cm (1-1.5") due to its thick midsole.
Influence: The New Balance 550 has experienced a meteoric rise in the fashion world, largely due to the influence of Aimé Leon Dore (ALD) and its founder, Teddy Santis. The collaboration, launched in 2020, catapulted the 550 into global prominence, solidifying its status within the sneakerhead and streetwear communities. This specific 'Lakers Pack - Vibrant Orange' colorway draws inspiration from the legendary Los Angeles Lakers, amplifying its cultural significance.
